Ex 183/ to be, or not to be... a policeman
Message de here4u posté le 13-07-2020 à 23:59:36 (S | E | F)
Hello!

Great challenge, isn't it?

I) Translate into French:

«But there’s a policeman here, here in this very house.»
There was a pause, then his interlocutor said, in a less casual voice: «He can be one of our chaps; did you see his number by any chance?»
«No.»
After another pause the voice said:
«Would you like us to send somebody now?»
«Yes, p-please.»
«All right then, we’ll be with you in a jiffy.»
Walter put back the receiver. What now? he asked himself. Should he barricade the door? Should he run out into the street? Should he try to rouse his housekeeper? A policeman of any sort was to be reckoned with: but a rogue policeman! A law-keeper turned law-breaker, roaming about loose, savaging people! How long would it take the real police to come? What was a jiffy in terms of minutes? While he was debating, the door opened and his guest came in.
«No room’s private when the street door’s once passed,» he said. «Had you forgotten I was a policeman?»
L.P. HARTLEY, The White Wand and Other Stories.

II) Write a pessimistic ending, and an optimistic one to this story. (50- 60 words for each ending!

I give you THE FORCE... I know you'll need it!

READY TO BE CORRECTED

Hello Here4U
Thanks a lot for this exercise which was a real pleasure to work on! I had so much fun imagining an end to the story!

Pessimistic :"Oh no, no, not at all. You see, I was just talking to my repairman who couldn't make it for yesterday. How about a nice cup of tea ? You can't say no, it wouldn't be British". Without listening to the answer, Walter prepared some tea, slipped a drug into the policeman's cup surreptitiously but got shot. (60)

Optimistic :"You do believe that I'm a policeman, don't you?" "Of course I do!" said Walter in an out of control trembling voice, with frightened eyes that the policeman who was approaching couldn't fail to notice. "Surprise! The man you were talking to was Laurent Baffie" said Marcel Béliveau while all the cameramen were showing up.  (58)

Hello Here4U,

Thank you for this very nice story but not necessarily funny to translate without making a counter-meaning to a short sentence: roaming about loose
Thank you for all the corrections

Dear Here4U
These texts don't have Graham Green 's style and won't make you tremble with fear like Edgar Allan Poe's stories

READY TO BE CORRECTED

On these words of warning, the individual punched the writer and made him collapse to the ground He grabbed the petrified with fear writer by the throat  ; while this was going on ... from the smashed front door a policeman entered the room and fired a shot at the individual , This one fell senseless next to the novelist's body 59

A policeman appeared in the doorway' At the sight of the individual he exclaimed
-Sir, what are you doing at the writer’s house?"
« Oh , you know, I didn’t want to hurt him ,only to scare him, so that he would stop writing about a few shady miscellaneous that must stay disguised
that being said : I 'm off » (58)

Hello, dear here4u,

In a jiffy I didn't do,
But I'm able nonetheless
To send you,
The translation,
And the ending,
To the story,
Ready to be corrected
In advance to the deadline

Translate into French:

Pessimistic ending.

Then the fake policeman sharply ordered Walter to sit down on a chair tying him and sealing his mouth with duct tape.
After that he prepared a syringe and explained to Walter the reasons why he was going to kill him, confirming Walter's supposition about a revenge by someone who had his life destroyed after slander were spread through the press .60
Optimistic ending

At the police district, the inspector who had spoken with Walter, suddenly remembered that one of the most wanted killer of the underworld, was used to disguise himself as a policeman in order to approach his victims.
He immediately organized a squad of armed intervention who burst into the house just in time to capture the criminal and save Walter’s life.60

All is well what ends well?
Thank you for the great exercise.

I hope you have a pleasant evening and…take care.
So long.

Hello Here4u,

(50- 60 words for each ending

Optimistic :

Suddenly, he was waked up with a start by the clinking of the teacups on the tray the housekeeper was bringing in his study, he rubbed his eyes and sighed, relieved at realizing that it has only been a nightmare …

Pessimistic :

“Hey guy, you wrote a lot of stories in which a poor bloke was unfairly accused of killing and could not get out of the accusation … well, consider me as an avenger and he shot … (short but impressive isn’t it ? …)

I wish you a very nice summer you deserve it after all your worries
Thank u for this story but shall we know the ending ..

Hello my dear Here4u ! Thanks !!!❤️ FINISHED!
Hi Everybody,

Great challenge, isn't it?

I) Translate into French: THIS ONE IS FINISHED…
Here is my work:
«But there’s a policeman here, here in this very house.»
There was a pause, then his interlocutor said, in a less casual voice: «He can be one of our chaps; did you see his number by any chance?»
«No.»
After another pause the voice said:
«Would you like us to send somebody now?»
«Yes, p-please.»
«All right then, we’ll be with you in a jiffy.»
Walter put back the receiver. What now? he asked himself. Should he barricade the door? Should he run out into the street? Should he try to rouse his housekeeper? «No room’s private when the street door’s once passed,» he said. «Had you forgotten I was a policeman?»
L.P. HARTLEY, The White Wand and Other Stories.

MY TRANSLATION:

II) Write a pessimistic ending, and an optimistic one to this story. (50- 60 words for each ending! FINISHED !

A pessimist ending :
The policeman, read Walter’s letters written to his mistress, the policeman’s wife. Both men were skined themselves alive, when suddenly, the policeman ran into the desk, where he broke his nose. The door was rang. Walter kept his composure and went to open the door.
« Hello sir, I am a policeman »...
"Hello Commissioner, what did happen to you?" 60 words.

« Bonjour Commissaire, que vous est-il arrivé ? »

AN optimistic ending :
A optimistic ending :
Until then, that unfolded as Walter had forecast it. The doorbell rang. A policewoman answered, giving a manlier tone to her voice. Walter opened his door. The Commissioner choked on his saliva when he recognised his wife, her Taser brandished, ready to be used against him, as if he were a dangerous wrongdoer, to be overpowered. He burst out laughing.60 words.

I give you THE FORCE... I know you'll need it!
Have a very, very sweet week, but also a great one ! ;😉
See you soon.

Hello, dearest Friends,

1.Translate into French:

« Oui, s’il … s’il vous plaît. »
« Très bien, alors. On arrive en un rien de temps (2)… »

Sorry Joe!
(3) Should he barricade: le « should...
To keep the law= to abide by the law= to obey/ respect the law MAIS le contraire = to break the law.
(5) a law-breaker: malfaiteur/ contrevenant/ criminel …
* to reckon with: take account of/ prendre en compte/ tenir compte de/ gérer.

* savaging people: Attacking brutally, physiquement/ attaquer violemment/ Cette phrase a été très mal comprise ... " A law breaker (roaming about loose,) savaging people!
